Subjective Norm and Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption in High School Adolescents

Abstract

Objective. Know the subjective norm towards tobacco and alcohol consumption. Methodology. Descriptive cross-sectional study carried out in 424 adolescents from Ciudad del Carmen Campeche, Mexico. A self-administered questionnaire was used that includes sociodemographic variables and alcohol and tobacco consumption, as well as the Subjective Norm scale towards Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption. Results. 42.9% of adolescents have used tobacco at some time in their life, and 69.6% have used alcohol at some time in their life. Family and peer influence is one of the factors responsible for explaining the acquisition of habits that influence the development, maintenance or elimination of adolescent behavior. Conclusions. The results show the magnitude of the problem, which requires the design and implementation of educational strategies led by the nursing professional with a focus on prevention and health promotion.
