Abstract

The objective of this study is to describe the relationship between childhood maltreatment and alcohol consumption, as well as the effect of child abuse on adolescent alcohol consumption. The sample consisted of 688 adolescents selected through a stratified random sampling. The measurement instruments used were the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (Bernstein & Fink, 1998) and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT [De la Fuente & Kershenobich, 1992]). The analysis and processing of the information was done through the statistical package SPSS version 21. Among the main findings, significant relationships were found between abuse and dependent and harmful alcohol consumption. Likewise, an effect was found between physical abuse and alcohol consumption in adolescents.
