Abstract

The use of new technologies determines a problem when the activity is excessive and causes a pathological hobby that leads to dependence on some technological device. The objective of this work was: to establish the level of use (without problem, occasional problems, problematic use or dependency) of internet and mobile phone in university students from Morelia, Mexico. Methodology: quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study. The sample was non-probabilistic for the convenience of 208 students. Three instruments were used: sociodemographic variable schedule, CERI instrument (α = 0.77) and CERM (α = 0.80). The ethical standards and criteria of anonymity and confidentiality were followed. Results: there were 103 men and 102 women; 48% have problematic cell phone use and 46% have problematic mobile phone use. Conclusions: University students show frequent problematic use that leads to dependency on the use of the internet and cell phones.
