UNCERTAINTY MANAGEMENT IN THE YOUNG ADULT PATIENT IN THE AREA OF TOCO-SURGERY
Abstract
Uncertainty is defined by Merle Mishel as the inability of the person to structure or categorize an event related to his illness. The result of the uncertainty process can be seen as an opportunity or threat. The objective was to reduce the level of uncertainty in young adult patients in the area of toco-surgery. We worked with 15 patients aged 18 to 38 who were scheduled for caesarean section. The level of uncertainty was assessed with the Merle Mishel scale, before and after a nursing intervention that consisted of providing advice on health care and surgical intervention. It was found that before nursing advice 60% of patients presented moderate uncertainty and after counseling 100% presented low uncertainty. It is concluded that providing nursing advice to young adult patients increases their confidence and tranquility before the surgical intervention.
