Abstract

The effectiveness of programs for the selection, collection, and reuse of recyclable materials (plastic, metal, and glass) depends on the regular participation of citizens in the separation and disposal of their domestic waste. Current literature shows evidence of association between the variables: Awareness of Individual Consequences of Recycling (ICC), Availability of Information Related to Recycling (DIRR), and Recycling Habits (HR). The objective of this investigation is to analyze the relationship between these variables and verify the level of association between them. The sample consisted of 352 Brazilians, 78% women, 31% between 26 and 35 years old, 47% graduates, 58% married, with the majority residing in Portugal for more than 3 years. The questionnaire was applied on a five-point Likert scale. Descriptive statistics, principal component factor analysis, Guttman's Lambda 2, and intraclass correlation were performed. The Structural Equations were calculated. All scales revealed reliable psychometric indicators regarding their factor organization. In the intended theoretical model, the statistical ratio presented a required range, confirming the hypothesis that the ICC influences the HR and these, in turn, influence the DIRR. The results of this work can contribute both to the formulation of public recycling policies and to the development of social engagement campaigns that aim to increase the habitual behavior of citizens in the separation and disposal of their domestic waste.
