Abstract

Introduction. Unhealthy lifestyles such as poor eating habits, physical inactivity, smoking, and overweight and obesity are important risk factors for the development of diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Goal. Evaluate the relationship of lifestyle with the level of risk for diabetes in adults from Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico. Methodology. Quantitative study with a non-experimental, correlational, and cross-sectional design. 251 people were selected with convenience sampling to participate. Instruments: FINDRISC scale and Lifestyle Scale (=0.86) and a general data card. The right to privacy and retraction of the participants was respected. Results. The mean age was 28.24 years (DE=12.52); 66.1% of the participants belong to the female gender; 66.1% are students with a bachelor's degree and 86.8% belong to the urban area of Morelia. It was found that 65.7% of the subjects presented an unhealthy lifestyle in the total scale and healthy dimensions. There was a slightly elevated risk of developing diabetes in 40.6%. A weak negative relationship (r=-.263, p<0.01) is observed between risk for diabetes and the activity and exercise dimension. Conclusions. More than half of the participants had an unhealthy lifestyle and four out of 10 slightly elevated risk for diabetes, although there was no statistically significant relationship between the two variables.
