Therapeutic adherence of people with diabetes in a fishing community: a quantitative study
Abstract
Introduction: Since therapeutic adherence can be influenced in a multicausal way, it is important to know how it occurs in minority populations in order to generate more effective interventions in the future. Objective: To determine the relationship between therapeutic adherence (TA) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in people with type 2 diabetes in a fishing community. Material and methods: non-experimental, crosssectional, correlational; The Adherence to Treatment Scale in Diabetes Mellitus 2 (EATDM) III was applied, α = 0.88, with 7 dimensions; 73 participants. For categorical data frequencies and percentages, for numerical data measures of central tendency and dispersion; for testing Pearson's r hypothesis. Results: Total of 46 (63%) women; mean for age (M) = 57.21, Standard Deviation (SD) = 13.128; primary schooling 48 people (65.8%), HbA1c M = 8.6, SD = 1.9; the lowest index was the communal support dimension, M = 32.74, SD = 15.55; No relationship was found between AT and HbA1c; between the medical control dimension and age a r = 0.249 (p = 0.033). Conclusion: It is important to investigate adherence and its relationship with HbA1c in minorities where the context and psychosocial variables play an important role in generating effective interventions
