Habitual consumption of video games and self-concept in primary schoolchildren
Abstract
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools are exposed at increasingly younger ages, both at home and in schools. For this reason, it is important to analyse the relationship between the habitual consumption of video games and self- concept in schoolchildren. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 125 schoolchildren of Tenerife. Self-concept was measured using the Piers-Harris Self- Concept Scale. Video game consumption habits were assessed using the Video Game Consumption Habits Questionnaire. Linear regression testing did not yield an association between habitual video game consumption with self-concept (unstandardised β = .184; t = .303; p = .857). In conclusion, habitual consumption of video games does not seem to be a differentiating element in the multidimensional self-concept of Spanish schoolchildren aged 10-12 years.
