Health literacy of working mothers for the management of Type 2 Diabetes
Abstract
Introduction: Currently diabetes represents a global public health problem, it poses challenges in patient- professional health communication, and has an impact on disease management and care. It impacts working mothers, as well as their family and socially, making this phenomenon a flexible process of interest to the nursing discipline. Objective: Describe the process of health literacy that working mothers with Type 2 Diabetes go through for the management of the disease, in the city of Puebla, Pue. Methods: Qualitative study based on grounded theory, 7 interviews were conducted with 4 working mothers, the criteria of credibility, transferability, consistency, and reliability proposed by Guba & Lincoln (1985) were followed. Results: The central category Health Literacy was identified, six subcategories that affect as relevant factors in the management of T2D: Knowledge of care, Resilience, Negotiation, Introspection, Perception of the disease and Health information, the latter is the starting point for the proper management of disease in the years following diagnosis. Conclusions: The process of Health Literacy that working mothers go through for the management of their disease was described through the analysis of the factors that influence decision making after receiving the diagnosis of T2D.
